Uhm... okay, what is this??? TAT it says it'll come out in 2009 ;;;
Yesterday night I was browsing through upcoming movies and this is what I found. Akira is going to be a movie with real actors??? Dx And what's more, it's said to be directed by Ruairi Robinson (I don't know who is he though ) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio who is also the producer..... Is this really true? Someone knows anything about this? ;w; I collected a few links about it because at first I couldn't believe it but... it sounds very true. What now? ;o;
Akira is my very favourite japanese movie so I was shocked to hear these news. And I don't think that the feeling and the atmosphere of the original animation can be remade in a live-action movie, though on some sites they say that the movie will use the manga as a base and not the anime.
What are your thoughts? ;-; I hope it won't end up like the Dragon Ball live-action ... not that I have seen that already, but I do have prejudices, because it can really ruin the whole series for some fans. The actors don't even look like how the characters are supposed to. But I'm not going to bash it before I've seen it.
Is it possible to make an anime into a VERY good live-action that worths watching?? (by americans) I'm not talking about the Death Note and Sailor Moon (though that was ridiculous imo... ) ones, and the others I don't know about.
This is a lovely gift from Hitsu-chan, I really love it!! ˇ///ˇ Thank you!! I really don't deserve such kindness ;-;
=Rueme drew this amazingly beautiful pic of my little rodent.. err.. I mean, character... Thank you so much Ruu-channn ;///;
This was an art trade with ~nondekin and I really love how it turned out!! °w° It's so pretty, thank you for the efforts !!!
Yep, they're most likely to make something new out of it (wtf, New-Manhattan instead of Neo-Tokyo ???! ), but then why can't they just come up with their own idea, instead of ruining an old classic, with a totally different genre (animation). Akira is such an awesome and unique movie, it'd be such a shame to make it look like a Hollywood box office thing.
Speed Racer was supposedly really good. LOL. Hollywood is also pondering on masking a Voltron, Death Note and Thundercats live-action, or so i've heard. Akira is positive though, it's been like a disease on Gaia, quite a bit of people have been talking about it since a few months back.

I think the main problem here is the fact, that, bluntly speaking, a movie is a product. It's sad but true. And it's hard to expect from the filmmakers, who spend millions of dollars, to not care if the movie sells or not.
I can't say for sure, but I don't think that Japanese animation is enough popular in U.S.A to fill the cinemas, that's why they change it and stare popular stars in order to attract the audience...
Despite having said that I'm against american companies making live action film out of anime, unless they really keep the feel of the original (which unfortunately doesn't happen).
Paradoxically, Japanese Live Action is not better, I reckon that mainly because of the lack of funds, since in order to make an acceptable Live Action Movie based on anime, it usually is needed to spend really a lot on special effects.

I only heard about it last night. I haven't seen this Speed Racer yet (what's that actually? )
I don't really know what I'm complaining about but, it's like... when I saw the posters of the recent Dragon Ball movie... the actor choices just weren't right. Son Goku doesn't even resemble his original self. I'm just afraid that with this, many people will get to know Akira like this, not knowing what the original was like. This is a two-sided blade though, because it might turn out very well, and people will love it and won't say that anime is crap. But if it'll be just a ridiculous movie with weird stuff all over, then... I don't want it to be made. Also, replacing Neo-Tokyo with New-Manhattan and translating the names... that just doesn't work. It's like repainting Mona Lisa to be a man, because of the men's inferiority complex. DiCaprio is not a bad producer, so it might not be that bad, but... I'm still pretty uncomfortable with the idea.

Yes, sadly, like ~xYASHAx said, even japanese live-actions are bad usually. I can't even think about what an american production would be like, they have a different way of thinking than japanese, and that just ruins the original story ;-; Besides, I don't think that either an anime or a manga would make a great movie. But then again, I do like the movies made from american comics, so maybe one day, this will change.
Devious Comments
For whatever reason, producers just can't stay true to the source material and have to Hollywoodize it.
